  11.                       Software Product Information

  13.  Parker, Colorado -- April 6, 1996 -- Rams' Island Software today
  14.  releases VendView for WindowsÖ, a powerful, free Windows-based viewer
  15.  for VENDINFO product information files. This provides the end user
  16.  with ready access to a wealth of information about software products,
  17.  and is especially useful for software products that are distributed
  18.  electronically. By viewing a VENDINFO file that accompanies the
  19.  software product -- perhaps even before downloading the product -- the
  20.  user can see quite detailed information about the product. Nearly 800
  21.  fields of information include detailed product descriptions, platform
  22.  requirements and recommendations, ordering and support contact
  23.  information, and much more.

  25.  In addition to basic product information, VendView for Windows
  26.  provides access to multimedia samples that can be included in special
  27.  VENDINFO.DOZ files. This allows the user to see screenshots, hear
  28.  audio samples, etc., while deciding whether or not to obtain the
  29.  product. There is even a capability for scripted multimedia
  30.  presentations that allow the product's publisher to "tell the story"
  31.  of the product in a very palatable fashion.

  33.  These capabilities also make the new VendView a natural vehicle for
  34.  electronic demonstration kits, as well as a handy resource for use by
  35.  CD-ROM front ends. Because the DOZ file can also carry press releases,
  36.  reviewer guidelines, company backgrounders, and other press-related
  37.  content, VendView for Windows is a natural vehicle for electronic
  38.  media kits, as well. Although VendView for Windows is free for use by
  39.  end users, these special uses involve a small, one-time license fee.

  41.  VendView for Windows is a natural tool for use with the World-Wide
  42.  Web. When configured as a helper application for a web browser, it
  43.  provides an instant viewer for VENDINFO files downloaded via the
  44.  browser.

  46.  VENDINFO is a system for conveying software product information and
  47.  distribution permissions from the author to distributors and users. A
  48.  standard file format allows a VENDINFO.DIZ file to carry extensive
  49.  information in a compressed, efficient form. VENDINFO provides
  50.  unprecedented capabilities for

  63.  distribution industry. All the major shareware trade associations
  64.  (ASP, STAR, ESC, ASAD) have endorsed the VENDINFO standard. Over 80%
  65.  of new products published by members of the Association of Shareware
  66.  Professionals are accompanied by VENDINFO files. Many on-line
  67.  services, electronic file-distribution services, CD-ROM publishers,
  68.  and disk vendors use VENDINFO files to help automate and improve the
  69.  quality of their services. For some of these, VENDINFO files are
  70.  required, and for many, products with VENDINFO files are given
  71.  preferential treatment. Some 30 manufacturers of BBS and similar
  72.  software have also committed to support the standard.
